Do the Texas Two-Step to Save Water

We’ve officially had the 5th wettest spring on record! But we all know that before long the hot, dry summer weather will be here.  That’s why we encourage y’all to do the Texas Two-Step for a healthy, resilient lawn this summer! 

It’s now mandatory and research shows that watering two days per week or less is more effective for maintaining a healthy lawn than watering 3 or more days per week.  Watering only two days per week allows the soil surface to dry out as water moves deeper into the soil, forcing turfgrasses to grow longer root systems to access that deeper water.  The result is a more resilient lawn that can withstand extreme temperatures (hot or cold) and drought conditions.

Dr. Becky Bowling, a turfgrass scientist formerly with the Texas A&M AgriLife Dallas Center, explains in this video the science behind the two-day-per-week recommendation. 

...as much of the water will be lost to evaporation and wind.  Plus, many cities have ordinances that prohibit watering during this time.  Watering from 3am to 6 am is best to avoid the heat of the day.
